Wedding venues on Lake Orta
Wedding in Orta San Giulio
The village and the island, on Lake Orta
The village is the set already
In Orta San Giulio there is no backdrop to build. There is the square opening onto the water, there are the lanes climbing away from it, and there is the island opposite, a few minutes by boat.
The cobbles, the water and the stone-slab roofs change colour over the course of the afternoon. The same three frames, two hours apart, look nothing alike.
A wedding that uses the whole village
Orta San Giulio is a village looking out over Lake Orta, and as a venue it behaves quite differently from a single property: it has no boundary. Piazza Motta, the Motta rise, the jetties and the crossing to the Isola di San Giulio all sit within the same day, a few minutes on foot from one another.
The wedding ceremony is held in the village, and the reception carries on in one of the historic houses facing the lake or the square. Between one moment and the next you move on foot or by boat, and the transfer stops being dead time: it becomes the part of the day when the two of you are alone and the noise of the party falls away.
A village cannot be booked. What I can do is know it well enough to know where the light will be at five, which lane stays in shade at midday, and which way to look when the boat pulls away from the jetty.
