Wedding at Villa Aminta, Stresa

The garden ends where the lake begins

Villa Aminta's garden runs down to the water, and Isola dei Pescatori sits right in front, a few hundred metres away: you only have to turn around for the lake to enter every frame.

I worked among the shaped hedges and on the lakefront terrace, then on the boat: from the motorboat you see the whole villa, its pale colour above the green.

A wedding at the villa of 1872 overlooking Lake Maggiore

Villa Aminta was built in 1872 as the private residence of the merchant Edoardo Horst; in 1886 it passed to Giacomo della Torre, who dedicated it to his daughter Aminta and gave it the name it still carries. Aminta lived here with her husband, Admiral Francesco Capece, until 1939; from 1950 the villa became a hotel, and in 1966 it welcomed Liz Taylor and Richard Burton.

Today it is Villa e Palazzo Aminta, a five-star hotel on the lakefront north of Stresa, restored by the Zanetta family from the 2000s onwards: Belle Époque halls, a garden on the water and the view of the Borromean Islands, accompanying the wedding from ceremony to reception.

In a villa this scenic the risk is photographing the villa and not the people: I keep the house in the background and let the couple decide where to look.
